WHY is this training important?

Individuals who face adversities like a natural disaster, in this context, flash floods that wipe out entire communities, are more likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (fact!). The aftermaths of such an ill-fated, unpredictable, uncontrollable, and mortal disaster are obviously dire physically, psychologically, spiritually, as well as financially not only for the victims, but also for survivors, bystanders, responders, witnesses, and the community as a whole. The affected community may be gripped by shock, grief, fear, loss, and trauma.

Of these challenges, one aspect where we all could offer aid to the community is by making accessible immediate psychological assistance/support in the wake of crises. Imagine this to be like how an ambulance may provide immediate “first-aid” to a person who just had an accident; similarly, there is something called Psychological First Aid that is designed with the goal to promote safety, stabilize survivors of disasters, and connect affected individuals to help and resources as short-term support tools. In short, PFA is designed to help people cope with the stress, shock, confusion, fear, feelings of hopelessness, grief, anger, guilt, and withdrawal that arise when a catastrophe (a disaster) has just occurred.

WHO can register for this training?

PFA is NOT a long-term intervention and is NOT psychotherapy or counseling for post-traumatic stress. Which is why, this method does NOT require a clinician or mental health professional to carry out the steps of care. The process can be learned and employed by anyone who can make direct contact with individuals affected by the crisis.

The earlier you can assist someone in gaining a sense of calm and meeting their immediate needs, the better they can cope throughout their state of trauma. In fact, research has PROVEN that PFA works better when the community as a whole is equipped to provide care, from the inside-out, instead of waiting to “import” mental health experts to provide assistance. Which is why, EVERYONE interested is invited to attend this training!
